Bravo to Noel Abbott (โ€œThe hidden costs of bad Amherst roads,โ€ Gazette, July 29) for his letter and suggestion that the Amherst Town Council hold a special meeting to hear from constituents about the hazardous condition of our roads. Back in March, 30 of my South Amherst neighbors and I signed a letter to the Town Council and Town Manager that made similar points and asked what the plan was to address them. To date, that letter has gone unanswered. Meanwhile, those winter potholes have reappeared. Itโ€™s unacceptable that Amherstโ€™s taxes are among the highest in the state, yet our roads rank last. Whatโ€™s the plan? We deserve to know. Itโ€™s past time for Amherst to address what will only become a bigger and more expensive problem. Schools and libraries are important, but โ€œyou canโ€™t get there from hereโ€ โ€” not if the roads are unsafe.
