- Robie Hubley, director of the Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary, today announced his candidacy for city councilor at large. A resident of Pynchon Meadow in Ward 4, Hubley will seek the Democratic nomination for an at-large council seat. He plans to continue as a member of the Northampton Conservation Commission for the time being.
- The Northampton board of public works last night elected Edwin C. Warner as chairman. Warner, who was appointed to the board only a few weeks ago, succeeds Floyd Andrus, who said that he is stepping down from the chairmanship because he is too busy to handle the job.

- Mayor Clare Higgins is reviewing the qualifications of two finalists for economic development coordinator and expects to make her decision next week. The two finalists are Teri A. Anderson, 43, of Westhampton, and M. J. Adams, 43, of Northampton. “They’re both great candidates,” Higgins said. “It’s going to be a difficult decision.”
- Next month, Northampton school teachers and administrators will take their own version of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System tests, when state auditors arrive to review their performance. Northampton has been selected as the first school district to be audited this fall under a recently developed state Department of Education program.

- The state Department of Revenue believes that Northampton would be “well-served” by combining the offices of treasurer and tax collector, a move that would bring workplace efficiencies, better oversight, and long-term cost savings, according to an agency review of the mayor’s proposed initiative.
- More than 200 people turned out Wednesday night for a “meet and greet” event hosted by New England Treatment Access just weeks before it opens its Conz Street medical marijuana dispensary. Eager and curious, the steady crowd of patients, doctors and advocates who arrived at the Fairfield Inn & Suites dropped off job applications, registered as patients with the soon-to-open dispensary and learned more about the cannabis-based therapies the fledgling organization plans to offer.
