- Mayor Sean. M. Dunphy announced today that he will not seek a fourth term as mayor of Northampton. Dunphy said that he wants “to have the opportunity to consider other ways to serve my community, with a commitment which would allow greater consideration for my family.” Last winter Dunphy was reported to be under consideration for a post in the cabinet of Gov. Dukakis.
- John H. Matteson of 40 Keyes St. today announced his candidacy for the Ward 5 City Council seat currently occupied by Council President Robert R. Patenaude. Matteson, who was defeated two years ago by Patenaude when he ran against the councilor in the Democratic primary, is running as an independent.

- The Northampton High School Spanish teacher who unsuccessfully applied for Vice Principal Frank Tudryn’s job has submitted her resignation. After 29 years teaching in the city, Arlene Kotowski, of Westfield, will take a higher-paying job next month teaching Spanish at the Minnechaug Regional High School in Wilbraham.
- Promoters of the July 8 country music concert at the Northampton Airport are locked in a dispute over who is responsible for money owed to companies that helped put on the show, which drew 5,000 fans but lost money. The promoters also are split over how big a loss the venture suffered. Estimates range from $25,000 to $40,000.

- State Senate President Stanley Roisenberg called on Berkshire Gas Co. Wednesday to immediately lift its moratorium on new and expanded service in Franklin, Hampshire and Berkshire counties and examine alternatives to meet the region’s need for additional demand. The company initiated its moratorium last December, stating that a lack of pipeline capacity compromised its ability to deliver gas to customers through the existing Tennessee Gas supply pipeline.
- Northampton city councilors Thursday unanimously supported Mayor David J. Narkewicz’s proposal to combine the offices of treasurer and collector. “If it’s more efficient and saves money, it’s good,” At-Large Councilor Jesse Adams said during the 10-minute hearing on the matter.
