The crime rate is at a 30-year low in Washington, D.C. so why is President Donald Trump calling in the National Guard and possibly the FBI to patrol Washington? Is this a signal of what is going to unfold in the U.S.? Probably.

What worries me is that the National Guard and, for that matter, the FBI are not trained for the crimes that are being committed — mainly muggins. In addition, there is no limit placed on the policing. Is it 30 days or forever?

Why now? Is it a distraction from the Epstein files? Is it seen as pandering to a base which requires spectacle and military force? We don’t know and perhaps searching for motivation is spending our time unwisely. Better to insist on probing the mission of this act and on its limiting principles — how long will it be in effect? And also considering thanking the Republican governor of Vermont, Phil Scott, for opposing sending troops to Washington.
