AMHERST — Bigger Than Sports is back with another tournament, and after several basketball and flag football events, this time they’re shifting gears to pickleball. In collaboration with UMass fraternity Phi Sigma Kappa, Bigger Than Sports will be hosting its first-ever pickleball tournament on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 12 p.m. at Mill River Park in Amherst.

Bigger Than Sports is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering high school student-athletes in lower income communities to reach their full potential outside of the playing surface — preparing them for life after high school sports, whether that’s in college or the workforce.

Ian Waite, an Amherst-Pelham Regional High School graduate, started Bigger Than Sports a little over a year ago. All proceeds from BTS’ tournaments go toward their mission in helping underserved students.

The deadline for signups is Sept. 18, and there will be raffles, food trucks and plenty of entertainment at Mill River throughout the pickleball tournament. As for game play, there will both be singles and doubles divisions with the winning teams earning $200 and the chance at more prizes.
