- We learn that the vein of lead ore in Southampton has been lately examined by Professor Eaton and several others. It is said the indications of the vein in the western part of the town are so favorable that a company is forming for the purpose of opening it, at a place three or four miles southwest of the well-known mine in that town.
- M. J. Tucker will give a course of lessons in penmanship at the room formerly occupied by Miss Whipple as a school room. No exertion on the part of the instructor shall be wanting to facilitate the progress of those who may favor him with their attendance. He flatters himself that a fair and useful hand may be acquired in 15 days — one lesson of two hours each day.

- City Messenger Thomas F. Burns today destroyed all of the old ballots which have accumulated in the city hall vaults during the past year. The ballots were taken to the gas house and burned in the furnaces there.
- The American Legion band is to give a public concert at the hotel corner in Florence tomorrow evening. A public dance will follow in the Rice Pavilion in the rear of the old hotel property. The bandstand will be set up near the dance platform for the convenience of the dancers.

- The Three County Fair opened yesterday two days earlier than usual and drew a good-sized crowd that enjoyed the nine-race parimutuel horse racing card, a number of exhibits including the first swine fitting show, and a daredevil auto thrill show. The total attendance for the first day was 8,171, a figure that might have been larger except for rain that began midway through the evening.
- An audit report of the UMass School of Education lists dozens of examples of “misuse” of funds and concludes that the university administration failed to monitor or control the abuses since 1970. Cases of invoices and checks with conflicting signatures, examples of “overpaid” graduate students, unwarranted and falsely documented travel expenses and payments to relatives of School of Education personnel or to persons who may not exist were cited.
