When mayoral candidate Dan Breindel expressed his opinion at the recent candidates forum at Bombyx that the L3Harris plant would “make Northampton a target in a nuclear war” he exposed himself as a sensationalist. Even as a very young child, I understood the absurdity of the instruction to “hide under your desk” as protection from a nuclear bomb. Presumably the entire Northeast of the United States, and much much more, would be obliterated by nuclear war. We should do everything possible to create peace in our neighborhoods, city, country, and world. But empty inflammatory statements are more harmful than helpful. We need substance, experience, compassion, as well as pragmatism to navigate these difficult times. This is why I will proudly vote for Mayor Sciarra’s reelection.
