In this seemingly endless and dispiriting time of the mad king, chaos reigns and cruelty is the coin the realm. Looking back at the rule of another mad king, George III, underlines how far we have fallen. Simply read the last phrase of the Declaration of Independence: “We mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”

Those who signed that compact were political representatives as well as some of the wealthiest colonists of the day. They laid it all on the line in an enormously risky gamble.
What a contrast to this era when Republicans have made themselves footstools on which King Donald rests his cankles and the wealthiest among us compete for the largest mega yachts and hole up in compounds. Those who flatter the gold-plated golf cheat hedge their bets and make their fortunes sacred. There is not a molecule of honor among them.
