WESTHAMPTON — One goal was all it took in Thursday’s field hockey showdown between Hampshire Regional and West Springfield. Unfortunately for the Raiders, they were unable to break through in a 1-0 loss to the Terriers at Dorunda Field.
Nate Xavier tallied the deciding strike in the County League meeting, which dropped Hampshire to 1-1 overall.
Raiders goalie Raegan Koske turned aside seven West Springfield shots in the defeat, while Terriers netminder Lleanni Esquilin had three saves.
Hampshire will hit the road for its first away contest on Tuesday when it travels to Turners Falls for another divisional matchup. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Belchertown 3, Amherst 1 — Three separate Orioles found the back of the net in their first win of the season on their home turf.
Rachel Baltazar, Jocelyn McMahon and Gianna Zenon scored for Belchertown with Zenon and Edith Audette (two) picking up assists.
The Hurricanes’ lone goal-scorer was Hattie Holabird off an assist from Elizabeth Woodruff.
Frontier 1, Agawam 1 — Addie Harrington scored the lone goal for the Redhawks in a tie with the Brownies in Agawam on Thursday.
Mace DeMaio had the assists while Brooke Charest made two saves for Frontier.
Boys soccer
PVCICS 3, Drury 0 — Nate Tuttle’s goal and assist catapulted the Dragons to their season-opening victory.
Tuttle scored the first goal of the game during the 32nd minute of the first half, then assisted on PVCICS’ second goal from Julian Lee-Choi in the second half.
Jack Herman provided an unassisted insurance marker during the 68th minute.
Dragons goalie Grace Rachele registered four saves, including a stop on a penalty kick in the first half.
Westfield Tech 1, Smith Academy 0 — A last-minute goal from the Tigers sunk the Falcons at home. Cameron Hilario scored with 30 seconds remaining in regulation for Westfield Tech off an assist from Zack Cook.
Smith Academy’s Callan Payne totaled 12 saves in the defeat as the Falcons fell to 0-2.
Hampshire 4, Lenox 2 — The Raiders doubled up on the Millionaires on Thursday night, as the offense erupted for four goals in a home win under the lights.
Hampshire scored three of its goals in the second half to break open a 1-1 tie. Goal scorers were Joe Moro, Eli Fern, William Warren and Colin Cahill. Warren, Cahill and Zach Hamel dished out helpers in the win.
Mount Everett 1, Gateway 0 — Zack Hess made seven saves for the Gators in a strong effort in goal, but Gateway couldn’t muster any goals in a shutout loss on Thursday.
Turners Falls 2, Hopkins 0 — Under the lights in the Powertown, Yolvin Ovalle and Noah Kolodziej tallied for Turners Falls in a 2-0 win on Thursday.
Monson 3, Granby 0 — The Rams were held scoreless in their first loss of the year.
Granby’s Daniel Santiago and Gage Carter still combined for 22 saves in goal, while Mustangs keeper Mason Murphy managed two saves.
Easthampton 6, Wahconah 0 — Younes Oulbeid, Ivan Skazka and Krish Patel each netted a pair of goals in the Eagles shutout victory at Nonotuck Park.
Goalie Thomas Meehan made two saves for Easthampton, which improved to 2-0 on the season.
Smith Voc 5, Pathfinder 4 — The Vikings came out on top during Thursday’s back-and-forth battle with Pioneers.
Jacob Maloney (two goals), Kaleb Jorritsma (two assists), Josh Cole and Joel Charbonneau (goal, assist each) highlighted Smith Voc’s offense.
Jaleel Roman netted a hat trick for Pathfinder.
Holyoke 3, Southwick 2 — The Purple Knights kicked off their season in style with a one-goal win over the Rams at home on Thursday afternoon.
Holyoke returns to action next Monday against Pathfinder.
Girls soccer
Frontier 1, Amherst 0 — Maggie Nichols was the difference in this competitively played match between the Redhawks and Hurricanes, as her tally served as the game-winner on Thursday afternoon.
Annika Redington made nine saves in the box for Amherst while Frontier keeper Jazzy Hayes recorded 11 saves in a terrific shutout effort.
Golf
Hampshire 155, Frontier 167 — Three birdies from both Brayden Fennessey (34) and Riley Florek (38) powered the Raiders to victory at Cherry Hill Golf Course.
Jacob Cornelison (39) and Brad Wood (39) paced the Redhawks on the links in the loss.
West Springfield 171, Amherst 182 — Ben Scott’s match-low 41 wasn’t enough for the Hurricanes in the defeat at Amherst Country Club.
Phin Pyecroft (46), Graham Van Diessen (47) and Owen Howard (48) also earned points for Amherst, which remains winless at 0-4.
Girls volleyball
Longmeadow 3, Amherst 0 — Alyciana Hackett put down seven kills, but the Hurricanes couldn’t consistently muster enough firepower to hang with the powerhouse Lancers in a straight-set sweep on Thursday evening in Amherst.
Set scores were 25-17, 25-10, 25-16.
Rosalie Davis dished out 10 assists, Ava Carey recorded a team-high nine digs and Kiko Bhowmik put down five kills for Amherst.
Easthampton 3, Belchertown 0 — The Eagles were dominant in a sweep of the Orioles on Thursday. Easthampton was led by Kathryn Koval (five kills), Brooke Skowron (three aces, six assists) and Summer Routhier (five digs, two aces).
Set scores were 25-19, 25-23, 25-20.
Layla Liminski had six aces and 11 digs for Belchertown, Olivia Skora had 11 assists and Cassidy MacLean recorded seven kills and six digs in the loss.
South Hadley 3, Athol 0 — The Tigers used a total team effort to blank the Bears. South Hadley won by scores of 25-21, 25-16, 25-20 to earn win No. 1 on the season.
Giana Vaillancourt picked up two kills, five assists, three aces and a block for the Tigers, while Abby Spooner and Dakota Dustin led the team in digs (four).
Eight different players contributed for South Hadley in some fashion in the home victory.
Cross country
Belchertown 17, Monson 41 (girls) — The Orioles swept the top three finishers on Thursday, as Molly Mazzaferro (first, 23:34), Kylie Fitzgerald (second, 25:08) and Serena Jones (third, 25:24) led the way to help Belchertown to a decisive win.
MaryRose Johnson-Jones (27.22.4) placed fifth as well for the Os.
Belchertown 18, Monson 45 (boys) — Similar to the girls, the Orioles boys team had four finishers in the top five as they cruised to a victory to sweep the meet on Thursday.
Cian Lindsay (18:54.8) and Emmett Howard (19:04.2) finished first and second for Belchertown, while Miles McNamara Belchertown (19:38.1) and Ryan Gould (19:41.9) notched fourth and fifth-place finishes.

Girls volleyball
Granby 3, Hampden Charter 1 — After winning only one game last season, the Rams have already grabbed a victory in 2025 as they won in four sets on Wednesday evening. Cailin Kibbie led the way with eight kills, six aces and four digs while Gina Auselle added six kills, six aces and four digs of her own.
Set scores were 25-21, 25-18, 17-25, 25-16
Lea Charest turned in a team-high 10 assists in a strong performance in the middle for Granby.
Boys soccer
Northampton 2, Ludlow 1 — Will Sean-McNally scored in the first half and Sam Busone followed suit in the second to give the Blue Devils a season-opening win over the Lions on Wednesday evening.
Ludlow scored late to cut the lead in half, but Salem Gregory (three saves) and the Northampton defense held on for the win. Owen MacLaughlin and Max Stocker dished out assists in the win.
Cross Country
Northampton 15, Agawam 50
Northampton 15, Chicopee 50
Northampton 15, Chicopee Comp 50 (boys) — The Blue Devils breezed through their first meet of the season on Wednesday afternoon, led by Henry Daggett, Xander Lane and Owen Daggett’s sub-19 times. Henry finished in 18:49, Lane crossed the line in 18:53 and Owen turned in a time of 18:55.
Shea O’Neil (19:21) and Asher Dixon (19:32) also ran well for Northampton in the win.
Northampton 15, Agawam 48
Northampton 15, Chicopee Comp 50
Northampton 15, Chicopee 50 — It was all Blue Devils on the leaderboard on Wednesday, as the top five finishers all belonged to Northampton in three blowout wins to start the cross country season.
Mairead O’Neil grabbed first (21:42), Charlotte Shimpach (23:42) came in second, Zea Meerbergen (23:57) finished third and Mia Levy (24:12) and Olive Chang (24:25) rounded out the top five.
