- Friday evening, a Springfield man was killed instantly, and his wife was seriously injured at the intersection of West and Glendale streets and Loudville and Pomeroy Meadow roads. Residents in the area of the “dangerous intersection” have been asking the board of selectmen that “somebody do something before someone gets killed.”
- It was standing room only in John M. Greene Hall last night as Jill K. Conway made her first official appearance before the Smith College community since she became Smith’s seventh president July 1. The occasion was the college’s opening convocation, which all Smith undergraduates are required to attend. The students gave Ms. Conway a standing ovation at the end of her talk.

- This summer the Northampton School Department followed a state mandate and devoted hundreds of hours of overtime to prepare for an extensive Department of Education audit. Now Superintendent Bruce E. Willard has learned that the audit has been postponed indefinitely.
- A graduate of Mount Holyoke College who has chosen to be an anonymous donor has given $10 million to the college, the largest gift in its 163-year history. The money is to be used as the primary funding for a $33.2 million integrated sciences complex that officials say will keep the college at the forefront in math and science research at liberal arts institutions.

- After a fundraising effort by Florence residents and businesses that brought in nearly $40,000, the fountain in Trinity Row Park will be up and running for the first time in over a decade by fall. Demolition of the old, defunct fountain was completed last week by Tacy Excavating and Construction owner Gene Tacy, a former city councilor who spearheaded the project and donated his company’s time and materials.
- This fall, it won’t take a trip down any rabbit holes to experience Sunderland’s own version of Wonderland. At Warner’s Farm on South Main Street, this year’s design for Mike’s Maze features Alice herself, the Cheshire Cat and some very unhappy pink flamingos.
