I’m writing in support of Laurie Loisel’s candidacy to represent Ward 3 on the Northampton City Council. Laurie loves this city and knows it well. She is qualified in every way, and at a time when leadership and civility are often overshadowed by partisanship and divisiveness, Laurie brings a refreshing approach rooted in collaboration, compassion, curiosity, and respect.
I’ve worked closely with Laurie at the Unitarian Society of Northampton and Florence where we are both members. We served together on the Board of Trustees and the Sanctuary Team, and I know her to be an incredibly hard worker and good communicator. Laurie is also a collaborative leader who knows that lasting solutions come from working together. She brings people to the table, listens with intention, and ensures that all voices are heard — not just the loudest ones.
Such was the case in our congregation in 2017. Laurie was instrumental in helping plan and guide “listening circles” during a period of discernment about whether we, as a congregation, should offer sanctuary to an undocumented immigrant. As we underwent this process for a few months, I saw her genuine curiosity in and respect for the ideas, questions, concerns, and fears of congregational members.
What impresses me most is Laurie’s openness to new ideas and her willingness to listen carefully, especially to those who disagree with her. I saw this during our Sanctuary Team meetings and our board meetings. Laurie wanted to hear from everyone. She didn’t cling to a position just to make a point — if new information or perspectives shifted the conversation, she was willing to change her mind. That kind of intellectual humility and integrity is rare, and it’s exactly what we need in public office.
I hope you will vote for Laurie Loisel on Sept. 16. Our community will be stronger with her voice at the table.
