Lynn Posner Rice
Northampton, MA – Lynn Posner Rice, architect, passed away at her home
on Kensington Avenue in Northampton on August 29th, surrounded by her
two loving sons, David and Robert, and her devoted husband of 52
years, Richard. She maintained her trademark calm and grace throughout
her mighty fight against cancer, buoyed by incredible support from her
family and community of friends. She is also survived by her sister,
Lisa, her daughter-in-law, Ingrid, and her granddaughter, Freya.
Lynn was born in 1952 in Queens, NY, and grew up in nearby Great Neck.
She studied history and art at the University of Pennsylvania, where
she met her husband, and later obtained her Master of Architecture at
Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. After some years living in Boston
and Italy, where she became an honorary citizen of a village in
Tuscany, she settled in Northampton in 1978 where she founded her
practice and started her family.
For the majority of her career, she worked in the office she designed
at 6 Crafts Ave, overlooking Main Street and City Hall. On her own and
with her partner, Mary Yun, she contributed countless beautiful houses
and commercial spaces to the landscape of our region, always attentive
to the big picture as well as to the small details that added warmth,
function, and beauty to her clients’ lives. (Images of her work are
available at: www.lpr-architect.com.) She leaves an indelible impact
as a beloved mother, wife, friend, and practitioner of her craft. She
inspired all who knew her to listen closely to their inner voices so
as to live with confidence, peace, and clarity of purpose.
A memorial will be held at the Northampton Friends Meeting House,
whose interior she designed, on September 27th at 3pm. All are
welcome.
