We have been privileged to know Mayor Gina-Louise Sciarra since she was 18 years old and a student at Smith College with our oldest daughter Liza. We have seen first hand how her commitment to public service and the public good has guided her life choices.
After graduation she focused on public policy issues while living in California, then in New York she worked on a Reproductive Freedom Project for the American Civil Liberties Union.
When she returned to the area to live 20 years ago, the First Churches of Northampton, where Peter was then the minister, hired her to run the Capital Campaign to “Raise the Roof ” after the ceiling of the historic sanctuary collapsed.
Connecting with many in Northampton and in public office during this time, she herself went on to be elected as Ward 4 City Councilor for two terms and then when elected as an at-large city councilor Mayor Sciarra was unanimously chosen to be the City Council president.
We cannot imagine a more qualified candidate to be the mayor of Northampton, the city that we love and have served. She has the heart, the skills and the experience to meet the challenges of this moment.
