- A consultant’s report has recommended that the city call a halt to further action on urban renewal until a decision is made on whether state aid will be available. The report was commissioned two weeks ago by the Pleasant/River Urban Renewal project’s steering committee for the purpose of exploring possible ways the project might be carried out.
- City Council President Robert R. Patenaude announced today that he would not accept the Republican nomination for mayor. Patenaude’s announcement assures the election of the Democratic mayoral nominee, David W. Cramer. There are no other Republican candidates. Patenaude, a Democrat, received 80 write-in votes in the Republican primary.

- One hundred years after its founding as a place of worship for Bay State’s blue-collar Roman Catholics, Blessed Sacrament Church is celebrating its centennial. “It’s the culmination of a year’s worth of celebrating,” said Michael T. Cahillane, chairman of the 100th Anniversary Committee and a member of the church for 30 years.
- Hampshire County Sheriff Robert J. Garvey, who operates Hampshire County Jail and House of Corrections, will receive the 2000 Good Scout Award during a special awards dinner on Thursday. Garvey, an active Boy Scout while growing up in Amherst, remains a supporter of the Boy Scouts of America.

- While fleeing a State Police cruiser Sept. 18, a sedan carrying four adults and two children went airborne off a highway exit ramp and rolled over multiple times, leaving occupants with what police called minor injuries. The driver was ultimately arrested on multiple charges, including reckless endangerment of children and conspiracy to shoplift, but the initial infraction that led to the chase — speeding — usually ends in a citation.
- The Dalai Lama, 80, has canceled the remainder of a U.S. tour — including a planned trip to the Pioneer Valley and an address at the University of Massachusetts and visits to other area colleges — following a medical evaluation earlier this week. “Upon completion of the evaluation, the doctors have advised that His Holiness take a complete rest,” a statement reads.
