- Ward 2 Councilor William C. Ames, who is the Republican candidate for councilor at large in November, yesterday announced the appointments of Richard Newman, Julia Saner and Everett Ladd to his campaign staff. Newman is a former councilor from Ward 5. Mrs. Saner is former chair of the Solid Waste Management Committee and a member of the board of public works. Ladd, a former member of the planning board, is president of Northampton National Bank.
- Thieves badly damaged an expensive cash register at the Han Lin restaurant on Locust Street but made off with only a few dollars, police said today. A cash register valued at $3,000 was damaged by thieves who broke into the restaurant. The thieves only found four or five dollars in the building.

- City police this weekend responded to three separate, unrelated incidents of violence near the downtown area, including one in which police said four people attacked a man in a car at the intersection of Main and King streets. Police arrested two people in connection with that incident and said they expected to summon two others into court to face charges.
- The Friends of Forbes Library is holding a celebration to honor the 297th birthday of Northampton’s most famous preacher, the Rev. Jonathan Edwards. The tribute to the religious and intellectual leader, which comes two days before the anniversary of his birth, will be held in the sanctuary of the First Churches at the corner of Main and Center streets.

- The Florence Pie Bar opened for business Friday and had to close early after a long and steady line of customers ate through the shop s entire supply of pies and other pastries. The business sold 160 slices of pie in addition to 90 other baked goods by 1 p.m. Over the next two days, customers ate over 500 additional slices of pie.
- Dr. R. F. Conway will leave his role as Cooley Dickinson Hospital’s emergency department medical director on Thursday after more than 33 years but will continue to work for the hospital in other capacities including as director of emergency medical services, which he has supervised over the same period.
