Cheryl B. (Dunton) Matthews

LEBANON, NH – Cheryl Beth Matthews (Dunton), age 81, passed away
peacefully on September 24, 2025, in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

Born on August 1, 1944, in Camden, Maine, Cheryl lived a life defined
by strength, love, and unwavering faith. Cheryl was the daughter of
James Fredrick Dunton and Dorothy (Cobb)

Dunton.

She was predeceased by her parents, her beloved son John Cox, her
brother James Dunton Jr., and her grandson Matthew Jean Vanasse.

She is survived by her husband Peter Matthews and her devoted
children: Angel, her oldest daughter; Everett (Jay), her son;
Bonnie-Jean, her daughter; and Rebecca (Bee), her youngest daughter.
Cheryl also leaves behind her cherished sister Debbie Jeffords. A
proud matriarch, Cheryl’s legacy continues through her large and
loving family. She was blessed with 18 grandchildren, 16
great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson, Khalil. Among these
many treasured relationships, she shared a particularly deep bond with
her grandson Paul-her “favorite,” as she often said-who shared many of
her interests. She loved calling him her favorite knowing all the
other grandkids knew how very special each of them was to her. She
also had a profound connection with Dillon, whom she lovingly raised
from early childhood. Her children were the center of her world, and
in recent years, Angel and Beccy stood by her side with unwavering
dedication as they helped guide her through health challenges that
only deepened their bond. Cheryl’s life was a testament to resilience
and independence. Described by those who knew her best as beautiful,
smart, fiercely stubborn, and incredibly strong, she faced a long and
difficult health journey with courage, dignity, and even a smile. Her
favorite word may have been “no,” but behind that fierce exterior was
a heart that beat for the well-being of her family above all else.

She found joy in the simple pleasures of life-fishing along quiet
waters, camping under the stars, hiking, scenic trails that fed her
adventurous spirit, tending to her garden with care, and even playing
video games with enthusiasm. Cheryl was also artistically gifted and
expressed herself through creative pursuits that reflected the vibrant
soul within.

Her spiritual journey began early in life when she was baptized on
June 8, 1952. Cheryl found deep comfort during her time at Little
Falls Baptist Church in Gorham, Maine. The church

community-and especially Pastor Gifford-held a special place in her
heart. Though she never found another congregation quite like it in
later years, Cheryl’s relationship with God remained steadfast
throughout her life. In her final days, scripture readings and prayers
brought her immense peace.

Cheryl’s presence left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough
to know her. Each relationship she nurtured was unique and deeply
personal-

she had a way of making everyone feel seen and loved. Her family will
forever cherish the memories they created together and the strength
she instilled in them through both her word and example. May Cheryl
Beth Matthews be remembered for the love she gave so freely, the
battles she fought so bravely, and the faith that carried her through
it all. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and
loved her.

There will be a celebration of Life at Look Park (one of Cheryl’s
family favorites) Sunday, June 14, 2026, at 1 PM. Cheryl loved her
Family and friends. Please come celebrate her with us. BBQ provided
