I am writing in support of Salem Derby to be the next mayor of Easthampton. Salem, who is currently serving as interim mayor, has spent his career as both an outstanding teacher and a devoted city councilor committed to the betterment of our city. For more than 20 years, he has worked these two jobs — always serving with integrity, honesty, hard work, and respect for all. His deep commitment to public service is driven by a genuine desire to improve the lives of people in this community. I have always believed that “actions speak louder than words,” and Salem’s actions speak volumes.

While I commend all the candidates for their willingness to serve, Salem is the only one with proven, results-driven experience. He helped lead the zoning ordinance (retail size cap) that prevented a Walmart from occupying the space now home to the River Valley Co-op. He also was the only city councilor to stand up and try to save the Pepin gym. Salem asked for a two-week extension to thoroughly review why the city “had to lose” the restriction that the School Reuse Committee originally placed on the redevelopment project. This willingness to ask hard questions and advocate for the community demonstrates the thoughtful leadership we need.

Salem’s commitment to inclusiveness and diversity is equally strong. He ensures that all people in Easthampton have a voice — and that their voices lead to constructive action. I am particularly grateful for his support of the LGBTQ+ community. Salem and his wife, Carissa, own Salon 180 East, where they embraced the “Safe in My Chair” initiative to create inclusive, judgment-free spaces, particularly for transgender clients. He also helped organize Unify Against Bullying to work with the salon on fundraising events and an anti-bullying cut-a-thon.

Raised in a diverse family by teacher parents who modeled acceptance and respect, Salem learned early to value people for who they are. That foundation shapes his work today and is why so many LGBTQ+ students see him as a trusted mentor.

Easthampton deserves a mayor who is experienced, inclusive, thoughtful, and visionary. Please join me in voting for Salem Derby as the next mayor of Easthampton.
