- Northampton Head Start needs a new home. The program which has operated for the past five years at the Edwards Church, is seeking new quarters since the church’s board of trustees voted to reserve the facilities for programs which might be developed under their new pastor.
- The inauguration of Jill Ker Conway as president of Smith College will take place on Oct. 19 in the college quadrangle. Dr. Conway is Smith’s seventh president and the first woman to hold the post. She assumed the presidency in July, coming to Smith from the University of Toronto, where she taught American history for 11 years and served as vice president for internal affairs.

- Added patrols and state-of-the-art radar equipment helped city police crack down on speeders this summer as they sought to slow traffic on some of the city’s busiest streets, police say. Sgt. Andrew Trushaw, the Northampton Police Department’s traffic supervisor, said officers during the two-month effort stopped more than 200 speeders, of whom 59 were issued tickets.
- From one end of Main Street to the other Monday, people from across Hampshire County celebrated all things Polish in the annual Pulaski Day Celebration. The Polish Heritage Committee organized a morning Mass, parade, and program of remembrance to honor those of Polish descent who served the United States, particularly the late Gen. Casimir Pulaski.

- An electrical problem started a fire in the basement of the Platinum Pony in Easthampton late Monday night. The fire caused about $175,000 in damage to the bar at 30 Cottage St. and Rene’s TV Service at 26 Cottage St., according to Easthampton Fire Chief David Mottor.
- The Daily Hampshire Gazette was honored Thursday as “Newspaper of the Year” in its circulation category in the six New England states. The 2015 award recognizes excellence in all aspects of the daily paper and its website, GazetteNET.com. Staff members received the award Thursday in Natick at the fall meeting of the New England Newspaper & Press Association.
