  • An 18-year-old Smith College student was stabbed last night while she was jogging near the college. The student said that she saw a man approaching her from the opposite direction as she was jogging. The man passed her, but she heard him turn around and come back toward her. She increased her pace to get away, but the man overtook her. As he passed, he stabbed her with a knife a single time.
  • Plans for expansion are in the works for the Florence Savings Bank, 83-85 Main St. The trustees have purchased the Callahan Block, formerly the Knights of Honor building. The building will be torn down for the bank expansion.

  • About 25 big rigs from Northampton city departments, local businesses and the military proved the focal point of the Northampton Police Department’s Big Rig Day II, held at the Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School. For three hours Saturday, children climbed all over the insides of cement mixers, buses, snowplows, tractors and other vehicles affectionately referred to as “big rigs.”
  • The Manhan Rail Trail Committee wants to create a mural along the trail. It would be over 100 feet long, painted on the wall of the Union Street Plaza in Easthampton. Since the mural will be public art, the Rail Trail Committee wants the community to decide what to depict.

  • With a $50,000 grant from the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation, Grow Food Northampton plans to bolster its efforts to provide the region’s low-income population with fresh, local food. “We’re really excited,” said Grow Food Northampton executive director Clem Clay, noting that the grant application was a competitive process.
  • Thursday marks night 198 for Kyle Nitzsche, out in his green-and-yellow four-person Eureka! tent. The 14-year-old camper has been sleeping al fresco every night since April 1 and has been anticipating reaching his 200-night goal by this weekend.
