  • Local members of the John Birch Society will be directing an educational campaign against the United Nations this month, with special emphasis on the United Nations Day, which is this Friday and which the Birch Society calls “a day of shame.” “People who have never questioned the United Nations before are now beginning to do so,” said Gary Benoit of 161 South St., leader for two of the Birch Society’s valley units.
  • City Councilor Edward P. Gross has been chosen to be clerk of the works for the new $5.7 million building project at Smith’s Vocational High School. Gross is just completing a stint as clerk of the works at the Walter Salvo House, the housing project for the elderly which the Northampton Housing Authority has built on Conz Street.

  • As part of Northampton’s No Place for Hate campaign against intolerance, an Art in the Park event will allow children and adults to express their thoughts on diversity. The event, offered by the Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender Community Center Project of Western Massachusetts, is set to take place in Pulaski Park today.
  • The Green Street Café is once again joining with a guest chef to hold a benefit dinner this weekend, with profits to go to Cancer Connection Inc., a local center that helps people with cancer and their families. Emmy Clausing of Main Street will be the guest chef for “The Taste of Nicaragua.”

  • Edward F. Borucki — one of the area’s last surviving Pearl Harbor veterans, and one of only a few thousand in the United States — died Saturday at the Soldier’s Home in Holyoke. He was 94. Borucki, a longtime Southampton resident, served in the U.S. Navy for five years until he was discharged in 1945 as a chief petty officer.
  • Challenger Marc G. Warner went on the offensive during a candidates’ forum Wednesday night, highlighting how he differs with incumbent at-large City Councilors William H. Dwight and Jesse M. Adams on issues including their compensation, plans for downtown and a proposed rail underpass.
