Mall-O-Ween at Holyoke Mall

HOLYOKE — The Holyoke Mall will host its annual Halloween Mall-O-Ween event on Thursday, Oct. 30, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the mall, 50 Holyoke St.

Participating mall retailers will be handing out candy throughout the center, making it a place for families and children of all ages to safely enjoy trick-or-treating.

Attendees can also participate in a Social Media Costume Contest. Simply snap a photo while trick-or-treating at the mall, post it on Facebook and/or Instagram, follow and tag the mall @HolyokeMall, and use the hashtag #HolyokeMallHalloween2025. Contestants must be at least 18 years of age. Winners will be announced on Nov. 3 and awarded prizes.

HCC opens registration for winter, spring classes

HOLYOKE — Registration is now open for Wintersession and spring 2026 semester classes at Holyoke Community College.

HCC’s 10-day Wintersession term begins Monday, Jan. 5, and ends Friday, Jan. 16. The Spring 2026 semester begins Tuesday, Jan. 20.  

Students can earn up to four transferable credits by taking Wintersession classes in anthropology, communications, criminal justice, economics, environmental science, geography, law, management, mathematics, nutrition, psychology, social science and sociology.  Most Wintersession classes are offered entirely online.    

In addition to the full, 15-week spring semester classes, HCC will run three accelerated spring flex start sessions: Flex Start I classes begin Jan. 20 and run for seven weeks; Flex Start II classes begin Monday, Feb. 2, and run for 12 weeks; Flex Start III classes begin Monday, March 23, and run for seven weeks.

Cemetery flagging for veterans in South Hadley

SOUTH HADLEY — The South Hadley American Legion Post 260 is inviting the public to assist with the annual tradition of placing American flags on the graves of veterans ahead of Veterans Day.

Cemetery flagging will take place this Saturday, Nov. 1, at 9 a.m., at Notre Dame Cemetery, 63 Lyman St.

HS seniors can apply for $26K in scholarships

The Henry David Thoreau Foundation awards collegiate scholarships of up to $26,000 to eight to 10 students graduating from public or private high schools in Massachusetts. As Henry David Thoreau Scholars, these select high school seniors may enroll in any college and university in the world while they major or minor in an environmentally related field.

High school seniors awarded the scholarships can enroll in any college and university in the world while they major or minor in an environmentally related field. Scholars are encouraged to enroll in internships or study abroad to broaden their awareness and understanding of environmental issues.

Henry David Thoreau Scholars have studied a wide variety of environmentally related areas, including biology, epidemiology, oceanography, international affairs, and environmental law, and upon completing their undergraduate degrees, they became members of the Henry David Thoreau Society.
