When no turn on red doesn’t make sense!
The new traffic lights on Northampton Road and University Drive/Snell Street is in need to be revised by the town of Amherst.
It doesn’t make any sense when the traffic light is red to not turn into Snell Street coming from the Northampton Road direction; turning from University Drive to Northampton Road; or turning from Snell into Northampton. There is no safety issue to do any of the above turn-on-red because you would be turning into an empty lane.
The traffic light down the street on the same Northampton and Pleasant streets is working fine without this annoying no-turn-on-red sign. This was according to my driving experience since 1994 when I moved to Amherst.
According to the EPA website, the average car can emit around 35 grams of CO2 per minute while idling.
I monitored the situation on two different occasions at this traffic light, and I found that the 20 idling vehicles waiting in three different directions were emitting 350 grams of CO2 in each time. Not to mention the delay to drivers this new system is causing.
Please go back to the old system to save our environment.
