- The City Council chambers were crowded Thursday night with Leeds residents who turned out to support the donation of the now unused Leeds Fire Station to St. Catherine’s Church. The council voted to turn over negotiations on the abandoned firehouse to its property subcommittee and the St. Catherine’s Parish Building Committee.
- “Wages for Students,” an informal group of a half dozen economists, schoolteachers, and economics graduate students at UMass, is circulating a pamphlet in Amherst, New York City, California and London urging students to demand wages for their “labor.” “Going to school, being a student is work,” the pamphlet says.

- The University of Massachusetts faces an uncertain financial future now that voters have decided to roll back taxes on income, UMass President William Bulger said Wednesday. Tuesday’s approval of Question 4, which phases in reduction of the state’s income tax from 5.85 percent to 5 percent, could hurt the university budget, Bulger said.
- When new movie theaters open Nov. 22 at the Hampshire Mall, people with computers, printers and Internet access will be able to buy their tickets in advance, without leaving their homes. The 12 new theaters, all with wall-to-wall screens, will be served by two box offices and two concession stands.

- Veterans in search of jobs got an exclusive chance Tuesday to speak with over 30 employers in health care, customer service and other industries at a job fair at the Franklin Hampshire Career Center. The fair’s first hour was open only to veterans, coinciding with national “Hire a Veteran” month and held the day before Veterans Day.
- About 200 Smith College students, Dean of the College Donna Lisker, and faculty and staff members joined in front of the Campus Center in the rain at noon Wednesday, calling attention to racism on campus and supporting similar actions at Ithaca College and the University of Missouri.
