- The state of Massachusetts is offering a special this week: from now until next Tuesday a 20-cent cup of coffee will cost only 20 cents. After that, the 20-cent beverage will cost you 22 cents. The price increase is part of the stateÕs newly adopted $363 million tax package.
- The vote of the United Nations General Assembly on Monday which declared that Zionism is a form of racism was strongly attacked by Jewish community leaders here today. “I think that we are witnessing the renewal of not only anti-Semitism, but also of anti-minority feeling,” University of Massachusetts Prof. Stanley Holt, president of the Amherst Jewish Community, said.

- The University of Massachusetts’ first private fund-raising campaign in the school’s 137-year history has been so successful for the Amherst campus, Chancellor David K. Scott says he plans to wrap it up early. The campaign has raised $122.6 million of the 125 million goal, Scott said.
- Serio’s Market this week quietly joined its closest neighbor and competitor, State Street Fruit Store, in stopping all cigarette sales. “It took us a while to come to the conclusion that it’s the right decision for us,” Christina Cavallari said Friday. She operates the 50-year-old, family-owned grocery store on State Street on behalf of her parents Edward and Josephine Cavallari.

- In a continued search for the Parks and Recreation Department’s new home, Northampton now plans to build an approximately 2,000-square-foot modular structure at JFK Middle School or Arcanum Field. The City Council approved allocating $400,000 from the city’s stabilization fund to build a modular structure for the recreation department at its Nov. 5 meeting, but the money is not tied to a specific site.
- University of Massachusetts Amherst students rallied for a range of social and economic issues Thursday at a demonstration billed as the Million Student March — one in a series of such events held on campuses around the country. About 200 students gathered in the Student Union.
