  • A special citizens committee which is studying the Academically Talented (AT) program in Northampton received statistics last night which reveal that at most only 25 percent of the city’s students who qualify for the program are selected. Children are chosen for the program based on teacher recommendations about which students would benefit the most from the AT instruction.
  • About 40 people met last night at the Unitarian Church in Northampton to protest high electricity rates. Drawn mostly from the Amherst-Northampton area, the meeting was described by its sponsors as the first step toward Hampshire County’s participation in the statewide campaign to cut residential power costs.

  • Some 41,622 acres in Deerfield, Conway, Hatfield, Whately and Williamsburg have been targeted for protection by the Nature Conservancy, a private international conservation organization that has preserved 11 million acres from development in the United States alone. “It’s bold, it’s ambitious and it’s a very long-term goal,” said Mark Tulay, director of development for the Massachusetts chapter.
  • Harold Patrick McGrath, once recognized by the Boston Society of Printers as “the finest printer in America,” died Tuesday night at the age of 78, at his home at 121 Willow Street in Northampton. Poets, printmakers, publishers, book binders, calligraphers and others involved in book arts were in touch with one another Wednesday sharing remembrances of their compatriot, associate, teacher and friend.

  • Paul’s Sugarhouse of Haydenville won two third-place awards in the North American Maple Syrup Council’s annual competition in Seven Spring, Pennsylvania. Paul’s Sugarhouse won awards for Grade A golden maple syrup and maple cream.
  • University of Massachusetts Amherst professor Keisha L. Greene has joined the board of directors for the New England Public Radio Foundation. She is a professor in the teacher education and curriculum studies department in the College of Education at UMass where she co-coordinates the English language arts secondary teacher education program.
