  • Patrick J. Melnik of 88 Round Hill Road passed the bar examination recently and is now associated with the Edwin M. Podolak Law office in Hadley. Melnik graduated first in his class of 226 at the New England School of Law in Boston last June.
  • The Singer Sewing Co. is moving from 180 Main St. to 126 Main St. The new location previously housed Jefferson’s Clothing store, which recently went out of business. The same location also recently housed Squire Village and Todd’s department store, both of which also went out of business.

  • The first floor of the building that once housed the Words & Pictures Museum, at 140 Main St., will be the site of a wireless telephone store owned by Cellular One, a national wireless communication company. Although there are several Cellular One shops in the eastern part of the state, the outlet will be the first company-owned store in western Massachusetts.
  • They came from as far away as Los Angeles, Seattle and New York to witness the start of a two-day event memorializing the former Northampton State Hospital. Tweed-clad psychologists mingled among pierced Smithies in Sweeney Auditorium on the Smith College campus during the inaugural event, which had Michael S. Dukakis delivering the keynote speech to an almost-full house.

  • A medical expert at Baystate Medical Center said Monday that a purer form of heroin circulating in the region is likely behind dozens of suspected heroin overdoses in recent days. Dr. Niels K. Rathlev, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Baystate, said the health care system treated more than 40 overdose patients from Thursday through Sunday.
  • A suspicious piece of mail and a bomb threat forced evacuations at two area high schools Tuesday. After investigating, emergency responders were able to clear both South Hadley High School and Easthampton High School of any danger.
