  • Two Vietnam veterans will open an Army-Navy store at 25 King St. here today. James Reardon, who was born in Milton, and Gary Johnson, from Hampden, will open the “Landing Zone Surplus, Inc.,” selling surplus army and navy equipment and clothes, as well as some new camping and hunting materials.
  • Jill Ker Conway, the first woman president of Smith College, was recently awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Mount Holyoke College. The degree was conferred by Mount Holyoke College President David B. Truman as part of the college’s annual Founder’s Day celebration.

  • The Easthampton City Council is giving support to a local sports fanatic. David Brooks, 41, wrote to the City Council seeking support in his endeavor to be “Patriots Fan of the Year.” The council agreed with the passage of a resolution Tuesday.
  • The U.S. Supreme Court stepped into the bitter, overtime struggle for the White House on Friday agreeing to consider George W. Bush’s appeal against the hand recounting of ballots in Florida, the state that will decide whether he or Al Gore becomes president.

  • A recently created “UMass Amherst Area White Students Union” Facebook page is not associated with the University of Massachusetts Amherst or any student groups, according to campus officials, and appears to be one of a number of similar hoax pages reported at colleges and universities around the country.
  • On what has been called “The Biggest Night in Latin Music,” Ben Gundersheimer, better known by his stage name, “Mister G,” won this year’s Latin Grammy for Best Children’s Album. The Whately resident attended the annual Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas on Thursday, when he won the award for his 2015 album “Los Animales,” a bilingual collection of original, animal-themed music.
