GRANBY — Six months after Tammy Martin took up the mantle as town administrator, the Select Board on Thursday appointed Police Chief Kevin O’Grady as acting town administrator.

The board convened for a short meeting before moving into executive session to discuss “pending or threatened litigation with a non-union employee.” Select Board members did not answer questions about what happened to Martin or why they appointed an acting town administrator.

O’Grady said he will put together a team to help him split his duties between town administration and the police department.

“I don’t want this to affect my position as a chief of police, because I love that job and it’s the most important thing, but I will step up and help the town the best I can,” O’Grady said.

Martin was appointed town administrator in the spring following the retirement of Christopher Martin (unrelated) in December 2024. Prior to that, Granby had several interim town administrators, including Christopher Martin himself, before finally landing on Tammy Martin as the replacement.

Select Board Chair Mark Bail explained that O’Grady will take care of the most pressing items such as unpaid bills, in the immediate future. Municipal leaders will form a plan on how to move forward from there.

“We need to figure out where we are at, what we are going to do in the near term and figure out what we’re gonna do in the long term,” he said.
