- Early next year is the target date for completion of the transformation of the former Bay State Co. building into a City Hall annex. Construction workers are installing electrical fixtures and an elevator into the Crafts Avenue structure, which the gas company gave to the city in 1973.
- A dozen residents in the lower Spring Street area have appealed a decision of the construction commission. The neighborhood residents are asking the state to overturn the decision to allow a West Springfield developer to proceed with construction of two homes located in the Mill River flood plain. The two cellars are below the 100-year-flood elevation determined by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

- After months of screening and layers of selection committees, four finalists have emerged from more than 40 applicants for Northampton superintendent of schools. The four finalists are: JoAnn D. Austin, Michael Cosgriff, Peter Z. Manoogian, and Joseph Rappa.
- A new New York Style delicatessen is expected to open next week at 159 Main St., where the Tailgate Picnic restaurant did business for 3 1/2 years. The new business will be called, Who s Next?

- Former University of Massachusetts basketball head coach John Calipari was back in Amherst this week. He spent Tuesday night in Boston for a banquet in his honor 20 years after he led UMass to the Final Four, and Wednesday at the Mullins Center where a banner was raised honoring him at halftime of the Minutemen’s win over New Orleans.
- Saying that the restructuring of operations at radio station WMUA will reduce the educational opportunities for students and diminish the cultural life of the Pioneer Valley, community members are calling on Senate President Stanley Rosenberg and University of Massachusetts President Marty Meehan to conduct a review of how officials at the Amherst campus made a decision to limit community involvement.
