What is Zionism?
The subtitle of J. M. Sorrel’s column [“Zionophobia zealots,” Gazette, Jan. 7] suggested I might learn the true definition of Zionism, but I did not see one. The ongoing tragedy in the Middle East has generated much sympathy and criticism of the state of Israel and discussion about antisemitism and criticism of the Israeli government.
Calls for the end of Israel are clearly antisemitic, but criticism of the government are no more antisemitic than me criticizing my own government as un-American. I hope the writer doe not conflate the two. The column hints maybe not, but it may hinge on what the definition of Zionism is. I await the next column.
