Tinka McArdle of Easthampton shared the following photo. “When I was growing up in North Carolina, black eyed peas and greens, traditionally collard or turnip greens, were served by my mother every New Year’s Day, as her mother also served on New Year’s Day. The peas represent peace in the coming year and the greens represent “green backs,” or dollars, a custom from West Africa. As “The NY Times” recently shared, good luck and good fortune are also symbolized. This year, my version is turkey soup with black eyed peas and kale. I also added vegetables and cinnamon to deepen the flavor.”
