Stockbridge, MA – Patricia Webber Schwartz of Stockbridge, MA, passed away on her 98 1/2 birthday, January 4, 2026.
Pat was born in Amherst, MA on July 4, 1927, and grew up in Brattleboro, VT, and New London, CT before training as a nurse at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Over the course of her career, she served as a nurse and psychiatric nurse in Mass General’s Phillips House; Lawrence Memorial Hospital; Veterans Hospital in Long Beach, CA; the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Haven, CT; Yale Psychiatric Institute; and Gaylord Hospital. Later in life, she also worked at the Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, MA.
During her time at the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Haven, CT, she met and married Daniel P. Schwartz, M.D., with whom she spent her married life of 68 years. While in New Haven, CT and Hamden, CT, she gave birth to her four children and contributed to their community by serving as a member of the board of the Clifford Beers Community Care Center. She was also a member of the PTA of Newhall Elementary School and actively involved with the Hamden School system’s desegregation efforts.
The Schwartz family moved to Amherst, MA in 1970 to be closer to her dear Aunt Ethel Moore, during which time her nephew joined the family. While in Amherst, she volunteered at Wildwood Elementary School Library and was elected as a representative to the Representative Town Meeting.
She and Dan later relocated to Stockbridge, MA, where she volunteered with Fairview Hospital, served as a board member of the Women’s Center in Pittsfield and president of the Tuesday Club, and was a tireless supporter of the Stockbridge Library and its archival museum.
Pat was predeceased by her husband Dan, her son Peter, and her brothers Frank, Ed, and Robert Webber, as well as her dear sister Honey.
She is survived by her sons Gregory (Nancy) of Amherst, MA; and Stephen (Annie O’Connor) of Wappingers Falls, NY; their daughter Nora Schwartz-Martin, M.D. (Frank Martin) of Amherst, MA; and nephew Robert Schwartz of Los Angeles, CA. She leaves behind six beloved grandchildren and two slightly more beloved great-grandchildren.
Pat and Dan enjoyed sharing the waters and sands of Madison, CT and Hutchinson Island, FL, as well as the hazards they happened upon while golfing. Pat will be remembered for the care and love she showed her entire family, her very biased and fervent praise for their professional and creative pursuits, and her unwavering hope that you will take a swim in the pool. In lieu of flowers, enjoy a glass of white wine in a beach chair overlooking Long Island Sound.
The family owes a debt of gratitude to the many people who were incredibly helpful in the final chapters of Pat and Dan’s life, including Phil and Donna Skowron, Agnes, Bonny, Shay, Ophelia, and Julie.
Memorial donations may be made to the Stockbridge Library at PO Box 119, Stockbridge, MA 01262.
