At the age of 80 I do my weekly standout for democracy in the little town of Hatfield, Massachusetts. I read with dismay the happenings in Minnesota. An American city, Americans like you and me, invaded by its own government. A government of “Republican” yes men, sycophants, who enjoy wealth, health care and the prerequisites of power and influence. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, you only see the stars when it is dark. Out of our constellation of Democrats, only one star, Becca Balint, representative of Vermont, has lit the darkness, not with words, or platitudes, but by going to Minnesota to witness what is happening and stand with fellow Americans. It is time for each of us to encourage all our representatives and senators along with their colleagues to go to Minnesota and literally stand on the streets and in the neighborhoods with the people of Minnesota to bear witness to what is happening. While our Democratic representatives may not be able to pass legislation, their physical presence as a group to be witnesses can be as powerful as any legislation.
