Photo choice distracted from ICE coverage
I was glad to see the Gazette provide front-page coverage of the Jan. 23 protest against ICE. With several hundred people in attendance, it is an issue that clearly resonates with our community.
However, I was disappointed by the choice of the primary photograph. Featuring an individual holding a Palestinian flag as the lead image for an anti-ICE rally felt like a significant editorial misstep. While various global issues often intersect at rallies, the flag has no direct connection to the specific actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
By choosing this image, the Gazette shifted the focus away from the atrocities happening here in America and toward a geopolitical conflict that serves only to divide the local conversation. Letโs keep the focus where it belongs: on the domestic policies and human rights concerns that brought those hundreds of people out into the streets.
