I was dismayed to read Ward 3 City Councilor Laurie Loisel, formerly of this paper, quoted in the Boston Globe: “I had to take Facebook and Instagram off my phone because I feel so heartsick about what’s happening to our city.” We are both heartsick about what’s happening in Northampton, but the cause is quite clearly that everyone is on Facebook and Instagram on their phones. This is made clear in the recent Globe’s story: our national politics are seeping into our local politics, and the spread is right there in the algorithms. I hope more of us quit these apps. It feels great, I promise.
