Amherst, MA – Joseph Randolph “Randy” Crowley, Jr., age 87, of Amherst, passed away peacefully at home on January 14.
Born in Amherst, Randy was a graduate of Amherst High School, where he distinguished himself as a three-sport star. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Springfield College in 1961, beginning a lifelong commitment to education and athletics. While teaching full-time and coaching, he earned his master’s degree from Westfield State College, a testament to his dedication and work ethic.
Randy dedicated 32 years to teaching physical education at Amherst Regional Junior High School. A passionate and highly respected coach, he served as track coach at Amherst Regional High School for 10 years and as cross country coach for 31 years, influencing and mentoring generations of student-athletes.
In addition to coaching, Randy was a distinguished track and field official. His officiating career included competitions at the highest levels, most notably the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport, he was inducted into the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Coaches Hall of Fame in 1990.
After retiring from teaching, Randy and Gretchen lived for 20 years in Ocala, Florida, where he enjoyed sharing a love of Disney with his family.
Randy was the beloved husband of Gretchen (Markert) Crowley of Amherst. He was a devoted father to his son, Michael Crowley of Inglewood, California; his daughters, Cathleen Teschke (Carl) of Belchertown and Elizabeth Crowley of Glenmont, New York; and a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Carl, Katelyn, Scott, Drew, Samantha, and Jordan. He was also a loving uncle to several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Dorothy Crowley; his brother, Francis; and his sister, Nancy. He is survived by his sister, Dottie, and his sister-in-law, Unity.
Burial will be private. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
