NORTHAMPTON — Police responded to Northampton High School after an individual entered the building and got into an “altercation” with a student on Wednesday afternoon.

“NPS administration and local law enforcement are currently investigating an altercation that occurred on campus today,” Superintendent Portia Bonner said in an email to the Gazette at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday. The incident occurred toward the end of the school day.

She said the individual entered the building legally for a scheduled appointment and was not an intruder.

“There was no failure-of-entry protocol,” Bonner wrote. “The administrative team is still debriefing about the incident.”

Bonner said the situation was quickly contained by Northampton Police and staff.

Due to the ongoing investigation and student privacy laws, Bonner said no further details can be provided at this time. Additional information will be shared with school families as it becomes available, according to Bonner.

Northampton Police and the Mayor’s Office declined to comment Wednesday afternoon.
