- Two of America’s perennial presidential candidates, Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey, D-Minn., and Alabama Gov. George Wallace, will visit Northampton in the coming week. Humphrey is scheduled to address a conference on world food problems at Smith College. Governor Wallace is scheduled to hold a rally at the Colonial Hilton Inn
- Students at the South Street School found a new way to celebrate the nation’s Bicentennial recently: they completed a Bicentennial Book Reading Contest in which everyone was a winner. Students in Grades 1 through 5 read a total of 534 books in the past four weeks. Each student reported on the book he or she read. Then students were served cake and ice cream to celebrate.

- Owners of the Hill and Dale Mall on King Street plan to expand and renovate the mall and offer space for four retailers, apparently including the Borders Books and Staples chain stores, according to documents filed Thursday. The plans are part of an application for a special permit and site-plan approval submitted to the city planning and development office by project developer Adams Associates of Walpole.
- Acting Deputy Fire Chief William Hurley said today that firefighters and ambulance crews have responded to four accidents on Hospital Hill in recent weeks, involving people injured while sledding.

- The David S. Dow Community Recording Studio laid down its inaugural tracks Saturday. The studio — now officially part of Valley Free Radio 103.3, a volunteer-run nonprofit station in the basement of 140 Pine St. in Florence — represents the culmination of a fundraising campaign that raised $3,000 to outfit the station’s spare room as a space for artists to record free of charge.
- State Senate President Stanley C. Rosenberg wants to reach out to members of one of the more disengaged groups of voters in the state — the young. To accomplish this, Rosenberg has put together a Millennial Engagement Initiative, headed by Sen. Eric Lesser of Longmeadow, who, at 30, is himself of the millennial generation.
