Regarding the article “Gas line misalignment delays Picture Main Street” [Gazette, March 6], the obvious questions raised by the misplacement of gas lines under Main Street are: how could Eversource lay gas lines and not know where they put them, and where was the city’s oversight of the Eversource project? A homeowner cannot make any modification to their property without a Northampton inspector reviewing every stage before work proceeds. How could a utility have made such a significant error without the city’s knowledge?

The next question is why there is any debate about who should pay for the test pits. If Eversource made the error, Eversource should pay to remap the lines. The answer seems straightforward.

One can only hope that the Picture Main Street project itself โ€” if it ever moves forward โ€” will be held to a higher standard of supervision.
