SOUTH DEERFIELD — The Granby boys volleyball team continued its hot start to the season, defeating Frontier in three sets (25-12, 25-12, 25-18) on Monday night.

After a win in the season opener against Ware last week, the Rams had an advantage over the Redhawks coming into the night with one game under their belt.

Despite looking a little bit less rusty, Granby still had some areas to improve upon, with head coach Chad Gagnon expecting more out of his group.

“The passing was a little poor today, which didn’t lead us to playing our offense like we can,” Gagnon said.

Where the Rams did find success offensively was getting the ball to Jake Gagnon, putting together a nice performance with 12 kills, 10 assists, six aces and three digs.

Nathan Walsh also helped carry the load in Granby’s win, tallying 17 assists, four kills, three aces, two digs and one block.

Late in the third set, Frontier kept things close, giving the Rams a scare and showing some areas to improve upon as the season progresses.

“We have a lot of work we can still do to clean up and get more refined and where we want to be,” Gagnon said. “This team’s got a pretty high ceiling. We have a much harder schedule this year, so we need to do better for the long run.”

Jack Phillips helped lead the charge for the RedHawks, finishing the team’s first match of the season with a team-high five kills, adding on one dig.

Despite being swept on the night, Frontier showed good fight late, playing through the final point. With plenty of season left to play, the RedHawks will look to take away as many positives from the loss as possible.

“Most of our starting lineup have only been playing for 10 days, and we keep reminding ourselves that it’s [going to] get there, and they’re gonna improve, and we just need some more time,” Frontier head coach Courtney Parent said. “And overall, throughout the sets, I thought we got better each set, which is all we’re asking for.”

The Redhawks will look to bounce back after dropping the first game of the campaign on Wednesday, April 1, at 5:30 p.m., when East Longmeadow comes into town.
