The recent, powerful column written by Sara Weinberger (“The hidden reality of children facing deportation alone,” April 20) left me deeply heartbroken and distressed. Given what she describes: the horrific system faced by immigrant children including traumatized toddlers whose parents have been detained or deported now having to represent themselves in immigration courts, I wanted to know, what can we do? What are some ways we can meaningfully confront this insanity and cruelty?
In speaking with Ms. Weinberger, I learned about the following actions steps that we can take: Write or call your state and federal legislators, as well as State Attorney General Andrea Campbell, as soon as possible, to express your concerns.
When you contact your state representatives, please specifically request as much money as possible in next year’s budget to increase the number of children who have legal representation.
Contact your Federal legislators: https://www.sec.state.ma.us/divisions/cis/government/gov-fed.htm.
Contact your state legislators: https://malegislature.gov/Search/FindMyLegislator.
Contact the state attorney general: (617) 727-2200.
