HUNTINGTON — The Gateway baseball team continued its undefeated start to the season, defeating Smith Academy 14-4 in six innings on Tuesday night for its eighth win of the year.
The Gators’ offense has been on fire to begin the year, scoring 10 or more runs in all but one contest. Tuesday’s win was no different, tallying 11 runs through the first two innings, eight of which came in the second.
“These guys are really playing as a team,” Gateway head coach Deryck Savoy said. “They’re really able to pick each other up. They’re playing good defense, the bats are coming alive and we’re just getting production all the way up and down the lineup.”
As well as they’ve done at the plate to start 2026, the Gators have been just as impressive on the mound with two arms dominating opponents.
Both Jacob Maynard and Weston Anderson have been consistently dominant in each of their outings across a combined 35 innings, again showing off their skills against the Falcons.
Anderson got the start on Tuesday, struggling a little bit in his one inning of work. Maynard was there to pick his teammate up in relief, allowing just one earned run in five innings with nine strikeouts on the bump.
“They work hard at pitching, and they work hard in practice,” Savoy said. “They play a real serious baseball, and just go out there and have the right attitude, getting it done.”
Maynard also continued his success in the batter’s box, finishing 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs. Anderson’s prowess at the plate was on display as well, going 4-for-4 with a run scored.
Smith Academy struggled to find offense throughout the night, with Nate Maloney and Boden Crevier tallying the team’s only two hits. The Falcons did find ways to create traffic on the basepaths despite the struggles, finishing with six walks and two hit-by-pitches.
The loss for Smith Academy drops its record to 2-4 on the season, looking to bounce back on Thursday, April 23, at 3 p.m., finishing a four-game road trip against Greenfield.
Gateway continues its flawless start to the year, now sitting at 8-0 over halfway through the regular season. The Gators will aim to stay hot on Monday, April 27, at 4 p.m. on the road against Commerce.
“A lot of these guys have been together since they were in T-ball,” Savoy said. “… What’s happened here for us is the core of this team is juniors. So they’re finally playing similar age, similar skill level baseball, and they’re just able to show what they’re made of.”
Smith Voc. 18, Sci-Tech 4 — The Vikings reached base safely a total of 27 times in what was a dominant offensive performance leading to a five-inning victory.
Owen Belden led the offensive explosion with three hits at the plate, one for extra bases, with two RBIs. Gavin Kukucka drove in three runs of his own in the win, picking up a pair of hits as well.
