- John Breguet, who has served as a Hampshire County Commissioner for 12 years, announced today he will not run for re-election this year. Breguet, 72, said that he made the decision last weekend, “after much thought for the health and interest of my family.” He said his decision is final.
- Tammy Lee Tuperkeizsis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Tuperkeizsis of Haydenville Road, was the fourth runner-up in the “Miss Dance” division of a dance competition held by Chapter 18 Dance Masters of America in Newington, Conn. Miss Tuperkeizsis has performed locally for various organizations, as well as at the Eastern States Exposition, West Springfield.

- Thirty-two years after he began working for the Northampton Fire Department, Deputy Chief Edward W. Passa, 54, will retire in July. Passa started as a full-time firefighter in May 1970 and ten years later was named a captain. In April 1985, he was named deputy chief, as was former chief Lawrence J. Jones.
- The small piece of land on Elm Street, in front of Northampton High School, is being considered for a park or a parking lot. Some 45 people turned out for a public hearing on the question Thursday night. Attendees voiced a multitude of opinions about the piece of land.

- It wasn’t a record-breaking drive, but the generosity of donors during Valley Gives Day helped pump more than $2 million into 453 participating nonprofit organizations. During the 24-hour online fundraising frenzy Tuesday, more than 10,000 donors provided approximately $1.8 million.
- Amherst Chinese Restaurant, in business for more than 40 years, is temporarily closed as new owners get ready to take it over. The restaurant first opened in 1973 after owner Tso-Cheng Chang earned a doctorate in plant science from UMass and saw a restaurant as a means of raising capital so he could buy a farm in Whately, which he did in 1976.
