The story about the U.S. Department of Education investigation into Smith College (“Federal officials to investigate Smith College’s transgender admissions policy,” Gazette, May 5) was framed as the Trump administration and conservatives vs. the college. But recognizing the reality and importance of biological sex is not a conservative viewpoint.
Title IX and women’s rights used to be Democratic Party cornerstones. Lots of liberals like me understand that a single-sex institution by definition has to exclude people of the other sex. It sounds like some at Smith agree. The role of a free press is to report reality and not omit inconvenient information. If merely “a majority” of students interviewed were opposed to the college limiting admission to biological females, then some students told the reporter they were in favor of it. Let’s hear their voices.
