AMHERST — The Northampton girls lacrosse team rode an early lead, taking home a comfortable 14-2 victory over Amherst on Friday night.

Offense came easily for the Blue Devils early on in the first quarter, finding the back of the net four times in the opening frame. With success on the defensive end as well to start the night, Northampton found itself with a four-goal lead as the first horn sounded.

“Our first quarters have pretty much been our best quarters in terms of offensive productivity,” Blue Devils head coach Ousmane Power-Greene said. “I think it gives us confidence…
Getting out early gets us going. If you can get out and get a couple goals right away, it looses people up a little bit, and you can keep playing.”

A majority of the offensive production for Northampton came from Imanni Power-Greene and Makayla Fydenkevez, who each made their way on the score sheet in the first 12 minutes.

The Blue Devils’ upperclassmen continued their attacking success throughout the remaining three quarters of play, each tallying five goals on the night.

“[Power-Greene and Makayla Fydenkevez are] our engine, they drive us,” Power-Greene said. “… They were big for us [on Friday]… In terms of scoring goals, but also creating opportunities for other people.”

Kaydence Braman added three goals of her own for Northampton, with Maren Sirois rounding out the 14th for the team with one goal in the second quarter.

Holding the substantial lead, the pressure then shifted to the defensive end, where the Blue Devils’ shut things down, allowing just one goal in each of the second and fourth quarters.

“I was proud of our defense,” Power-Greene said. “[Amherst has] some really good dodgers, and they had trouble with our zone, dodging at the top because they’re midfield dominant. I think that’s what made it a little tougher for them to score goals.”

Despite the offensive struggles, the Hurricanes didn’t go out without a fight on Friday. Ava Carey and Elise Woodruff both found a way to reach the back of the net in the loss.

The loss puts Amherst at an even 7-7 on the season to this point, with just one game left on the regular season schedule to potentially get back over .500. The Hurricanes take on Chicopee Comp on Monday, May 11, at 6:30 p.m., back at home.

Northampton improves to 7-8 on the year with Friday night’s victory, looking to keep stacking wins as the season comes to a close. The Blue Devils will be back in action on Monday, May 11, at 7 p.m., playing host to Minnechaug.

“I feel really good about us being able to compete,” Power-Greene said. “That’s what we focus on. Focus on competing each quarter, each play and then seeing how things turn out at the end. As opposed to focusing on end results. That’s been our goal, and I’m feeling good right now about where we’re at.”
