Please read the May 18 guest column [“Vote “yes” for Easthampton“] concerning Easthampton’s upcoming override vote. This is the last paragraph. “For me, like many friends and community members, there are multiple truths. I feel frustrated with the process, I’m worried about affordability, and I’m disappointed in government decisions, and I know that our community cannot absorb the proposed cuts without lasting damage on the most vulnerable members in our community. I hope others will join me in voting “yes” on June 9 while continuing to demand the accountability and long-term planning our community deserves.”

This is what happens when a new mayor is sworn in and asks where all the money went. This is what happens when sustainability plans are not put in place or, if extant are not adhered to; when stabilization funds are not created, or if created, are used for purposes other than those originaly intended.

Northampton has issues for sure, made more troubling beecaue we have no consensus on our most important priorities. But, despite the anguish many communities are now experiencing, we are benefiting from the very solid municpal financial planning that has sustained us.

We need to support our mayor as she presents and defends our next budget.
