Thanks to all those in Northampton who contributed to this year’s Post Office Food Drive. We were among the volunteers at the Northampton Survival Center who unloaded the postal trucks and delivered the food to its storage pods. Heavy loads, working through rain showers — everybody got wet and tired, but was cheerful through it all.

The big news that came later was that 20,500 pounds of food were donated!

As regular volunteers at the Center we were aware of all the work that it took to get ready for the big day. Hats off to the staff and board of NSC for their seamless organization of the day to day operations, and especially to volunteer coordinator Diane Drohan. All together, about 150 volunteers pitched in, many delivering the orange donation bags to Northampton residents.

The Northampton Survival Center is a heartening reflection of our community. An atmosphere of optimism and good will prevails, proving that a diverse group of people from all kinds of backgrounds and circumstances can make things work.

Now more than ever, well-run nonprofits like NSC are what keep the country functioning.
