The Amherst boys tennis team advanced to the Round of 32 of the MIAA Division 3 state tournament after its 3-2 win against Dighton-Rehoboth on Tuesday.

The No. 31 Hurricanes hosted the No. 34 Falcons at the Amherst Middle School Courts and needed every last point to move on.

Amherst clinched the victory in first doubles as Tim Sun & Noah Magnus overcame a first-set defeat to earn its third and final point of the match. Set scores finished at 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.

The ‘Canes picked up two points in singles, as Elias Katsuros (6-0, 6-0) and Amitav Dhingra (6-3, 6-2) played well despite temperatures rising above 80 degrees.

Amherst will travel to second-seeded Wayland in its Round of 32 matchup, which is set to take place on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Girls lacrosse

Amherst 13, Medway 6 — The Hurricanes stormed past the Mustangs on the road in their Div. 3 preliminary-round win.

Kiko Bhowmik provided much of the offense for Amherst, netting five goals. Claire Kennedy (hat trick) and Zoriah Kenney (two goals) also factored in multi-goal games for the ‘Canes.

Eden Polak made nine saves in net for the victors.

Amherst moves on to the Round of 32 where it’ll square off with top-seeded Cohasset on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Sturgis West 15, Smith Voc 8 — The Vikings’ season came to a close in the preliminary round of the Div. 4 tournament.

Smith Voc concluded the season at 9-6 overall.

Girls tennis

Archbishop Williams 4, Northampton 1 — The Blue Devils avoided the sweep in their Div. 2 preliminary round defeat in Quincy, which ended their season.

Northampton posted a 10-7 final record.
