  • The need for low-income housing in Northampton may soon be met, if a new $86,000 housing assistant plan is approved. The program would provide subsidies for rehabilitation and mortgage or rent payments. It also recommends between 20 and 40 units of new or rehabilitated housing for low-income persons
  • Former University of Massachusetts President John W. Lederle will be one of six persons to be honored by the UMass Alumni Association at a special reunion this weekend on the Amherst campus. The former UMass president first came to the campus in 1960, and, according to a citation he will be awarded, the real chronicle of his leadership lay in what happened in the following decade.

  • Hampshire Community United Way’s board of directors has voted to cut off funding for the regional council of the Boy Scouts of America because of the national organization’s ban on gay leaders โ€” a move drawing criticism from local Scouting leaders. Thursday’s vote will remove $16,000 from the $550,000 annual budget of the Great Trails Council.
  • The Garden, a Northampton-based center for grieving young people, added 30 new plants to its memorial garden in a private ceremony at the Hampshire Regional YMCA Sunday. The garden, on Massasoit Street near the entrance to the YMCA, was begun last year, said Barbara Weiner, who founded The Garden Center for Grieving Children and Teens, at 90 Conz St., in 1998.

  • An animal welfare watchdog group is alleging that “gross negligence” led to the death of a research monkey in a UMass Amherst animal care facility on Oct. 15, 2015. The marmoset was severely burned while it recovered from surgery. The incident was noted in a May 2016 inspection report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
  • The Cooley Dickinson Health Care trustees said Friday they will donate $30,000 to the city of Northampton, with annual $10,000 installments, through 2018. However, this is not to be misconstrued as an endorsement of a payment in lieu of taxes program, hospital officials said.
