Joseph M. Deren

Florence, MA – Joseph Michael Deren, 84, of Florence, passed away peacefully on Monday May 31, 2026, at Cooley Dickinson Hospital surrounded by his loving wife and family at his side. He was born in Holyoke on September 14, 1941, to the late Joseph S. and Sophie (Tobiasz) Deren.

He was raised in Holyoke and attended local schools. After completing his education, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he worked for various contractors hanging drywall. He later met his future wife, Halina Atanowski, and they were married on June 20, 2009. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Halina Atanowski-Deren, of Florence, his children, Joanne, Kim, and Joey, his brother, Robert Deren of Easthampton, and sister, Connie Worten of Easthampton, several nieces and nephews, and his furry companion, Casey.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his son Michael Deren, his brothers, Teddy and Daniel, and sisters Dorothy and Christine.
